Collection: Akifusa Suminagashi - Nao Yamamoto

Discover Premium Handcrafted Japanese Knives by Award-Winning Blacksmith Nao Yamamo

Experience the precision and beauty of traditional Japanese knife-making with the Akifusa Suminagashi Collection, meticulously handcrafted by Nao Yamamo—one of Japan’s most promising young blacksmiths and a recipient of the prestigious Dentokougeshi Traditional Craftsman Award.

Forged in the renowned knife-making village of Takefu, Echizen—home to legendary craftsmen like Hideo Kitaoka and Takeshi Saji—each knife in this collection reflects the legacy and skill of generations of master artisans.
Fun fact: Nao’s workshop is a few doors down from Saji

The Akifusa Suminagashi knives feature a core of Aogami Super Steel (also known as Super Blue Steel or Blue Paper Steel)  that is easy to sharpen while maintaining a sharp edge. This high-carbon steel is known for its excellent edge retention and ability to take a very fine edge

The term Suminagashi, meaning “floating ink,” describes the stunning ripple-like patterns on the cladding—a visual signature of this artisanal blade. Each knife showcases a Kurouchi Tsuchime finish. Nao prides himself on having some of the blackest, deep Kuro finish.

Crafted entirely by hand using time-honored techniques, these knives are a true labor of love. Nao works alongside just one assistant—his brother-in-law—to ensure every blade meets the highest standards of quality. Nao’s knives are as visually striking as they are performance-driven.

*The steel (core and cladding) with these Japanese knives will darken over time (patina) with use.
